Alex Wood has been one of the best pitchers for the Dodgers and, arguably, in all of the MLB this season. Yes, you heard me correctly, I said Alex Wood.
Two years ago, hell even last year, you would have never heard those words come out of my mouth. When the Dodgers called up Wood on July 30, 2015 they were looking for another starting pitcher to add to the rotation. What they got was a pitcher who ended the season with a 4.35 ERA and a 5-6 record in 2015 and a 3.73 ERA and a 1-4 record last season.
Every time Wood took the mound in his first two seasons with the Dodgers I thought to myself “Why are they starting this kid? He isn’t good.” I, now, stand corrected. Alex Wood has been lights out. In 7 starts so far this season, Wood is 5-0 with an ERA of 1.88 and a 1.02 WHIP. Compare those numbers to the Dodgers’ ace and future “Hall of Famer” Clayton Kershaw who has a 7-2 record with a 2.01 ERA and 0.82 WHIP you could say Wood is vying for the #2 spot on the Dodgers pitching rotation.
Amongst all pitchers in the MLB, the 26-year-old southpaw ranks 3rd in ERA, 6th in wins and 9th in WHIP. Tonight, he looks to continue his 20.1 scoreless inning streak as well as earn his 6th win against the Chicago Cubs.
